Many foods sold in Maldives lack scientifically proven health benefits: MFDA

World ·
The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has said that many food products sold in the Maldivian market are varieties whose health benefits have not been scientifically proven. In a statement issued today, the MFDA said some foods produced and sold in the Maldives are advertised using laboratory reports in a way that suggests they treat diseases or bring desired changes to the body. However, the authority said using laboratory reports or other documents related to the health benefits of food for advertising is prohibited under regulations. "The health information included in food prepared, produced and advertised claiming to treat diseases or bring desired changes to the body must be true information proven by scientific studies," the MFDA said. The MFDA said many such products available for sale in the Maldives market are not products whose health benefits have been scientifically confirmed. The authority has requested producers and sellers not to market products in a way that implies they cure diseases or bring specific changes to the body.
