Maroof calls for live TV broadcast of inquiry hearings into Maldives-Mauritius maritime dispute

Politics ·
Former Under Secretary for Legal Affairs at the President's Office and lawyer Ahmed Maroof has called for all investigative hearings of the special commission established by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to examine the actions taken by Maldives in the maritime delimitation case with Mauritius to be broadcast live on television and made public. Maroof made these remarks in connection with the establishment of a special presidential commission to investigate the manner in which the state acted in the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) case, citing significant damages suffered by the Republic of Maldives. Maroof stated that although the government came to power claiming it would examine the issues of the previous government's leaders in the case, nothing has been done so far, and despite a presidential promise to appeal the ITLOS decision, this has not been done even after three years in power. He also said that the government is currently raising this issue suddenly to divert discussions related to the Rasfaharu project.
