Mauroof Ahmed Appointed Special Advisor to Decentralise Sports Development Across Atolls

Mauroof ‘Maatte’ Ahmed has been appointed as the Special Advisor on Sports Decentralisation to the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness, Abdulla Rafiu. The appointment comes as the government intensifies its efforts to prioritize the development of high-performance athletes nationwide. In his new role, the veteran footballer and coach will focus on expanding sports infrastructure and talent identification beyond the capital, Malé. His primary mandate includes advising on the decentralization of sports development and designing a comprehensive national plan to nurture athletic talent within the atolls. This initiative aims to create a sustainable system where high-performance athletes can be identified and trained regardless of their geographic location. Mauroof brings an extensive blend of academic and practical expertise to the position. He holds a Master’s degree in Sports Marketing and Sponsorship alongside a Postgraduate Diploma in Sponsorship, providing him with the strategic tools necessary to modernize the country's sports landscape. Widely recognized as one of the most accomplished goalkeepers in Maldivian football history, Mauroof achieved significant success during his playing career with Victory Sports Club. His transition from the pitch to administration has been marked by several high-level appointments, including roles as Technical Director, General Secretary, and National Team Manager at the Football Association of Maldives (FAM). Beyond sports, Mauroof has a proven track record in public administration. He previously served as the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and held senior positions at the Ministry of Higher Education, Employment and Social Security, including Director and Assistant Director General between 2004 and 2006. He has also led the Maldives Sports Corporation as Managing Director and chaired the FAM Awards Committee. This strategic appointment signals the government's intent to move away from a centralized sports model, ensuring that youth in the outer islands have equal access to elite coaching and development opportunities.
