Mayor Azim Under Fire for Comments on MDP's Despair After Election Defeat

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has sparked controversy after stating that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was 'weak with despair' following its defeat in the 2023 presidential election. Azim, who is vying for the MDP mayoral ticket in the upcoming local council elections, made the remarks during a campaign event, claiming that party members were under a 'blanket of despair' after the election loss. He further asserted that he was the one who 'bravely came out from under the blanket of despair' and rekindled the party's spirit by securing the mayoral seat for the MDP. However, his comments were met with criticism from within the party. MDP activist Hussain Shafiu accused Azim of being self-centered and devaluing ordinary party members by portraying them as demoralized. Former Defense Minister and ex-MDP Chairperson Mariya Ahmed Didi also condemned the remarks, calling them unacceptable and demanding that Azim apologize to MDP members.
