MDP Accuses Government of Political Influence in Fishermen Protest Detainees' Remand
Politics ·
The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused the government of exerting political influence to remand individuals arrested during a fishermen’s protest in police custody. The protest, organized by the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU), a trade union representing yellowfin tuna fishermen, began on Wednesday at the Hulhumale’ jetty and later moved to Male’ City. The BKMU claims around 60 fishing boats participated, protesting the government’s failure to fulfill promises regarding yellowfin tuna purchases and securing revenue for fishermen. Police stormed the boats on Thursday, arresting eight protestors—four Maldivians and four expatriates. The expatriates were handed over to Immigration, while the Maldivians, including Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, were remanded in police custody for five days by the Criminal Court. The MDP condemned the decision, calling it unconstitutional and politically influenced, and demanded the immediate release of all detainees. The BKMU continues to demand that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration fulfill its manifesto pledges, including purchasing yellowfin tuna, setting a floor price, and improving fuel and ice access for fishermen.
