MDP Accuses PNC of Attempting to 'Steal' 2028 Presidential Election Under Pretext of Public Consultation
Politics ·
Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) lawmakers have accused the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) of attempting to 'steal' the 2028 presidential election by pushing for a constitutional amendment to merge presidential and parliamentary elections. During Tuesday’s parliamentary session, South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem criticized the urgency of the amendment, questioning PNC’s motives. He described the public consultation process as a 'deceptive maneuver.' South Hulhumale’ MP Ahmed Shamheed also condemned the amendment, calling it a 'sinister plot' by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to extend his term while shortening lawmakers' tenure. The amendment, proposed by PNC’s parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Falah, seeks to combine the elections and change the inauguration of the new parliamentary assembly to December 1st, shortening the current assembly's term by six months. The bill was passed by the Independent Institutions Committee and approved by 72 out of 73 lawmakers present.
