MDP Conducts Primary Elections Amid Intense Competition for Local Council and WDC Tickets

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held its primary elections on January 16 to select candidates for the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections. Voting began at 2:30pm and concluded at 8pm. Over 510 candidates competed for Local Council seats, while more than 190 vied for WDC positions. A total of 65 ballot boxes were set up across the country, with 14 in Malé City for residents of other atolls, 17 in Malé City constituencies, and 34 across various islands outside the capital. Key polling locations included Majeedhiyaa School, Galolhu Madharusaa, Iskandhar School, Hiriyaa School, Muhyiddin School, Ghazee School, and Kamil Didi School. Additionally, Kalaafaanu School hosted ballot boxes for atoll residents in Malé. Outside the capital, Gaaf Dhaal Atoll Education Center saw the highest number of ballot boxes, with Thinadhoo, L. Gan, Addu City, S. Hulhudhoo, Fuvahmulah City, Gaaf Dhaal, and Gaaf Alif also hosting polling stations.
