MDP Faces Challenges in Local Council Elections Amid City Governance Concerns
Politics ·
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is facing significant challenges in the upcoming local council elections, particularly concerning the governance of cities. Despite the party's efforts to strategize for the April elections, issues related to the management of city councils and the allocation of responsibilities have posed hurdles. MDP's leadership has acknowledged that while the party is preparing for the elections, the manner in which city councils are being run and the lack of clear jurisdiction for members are complicating matters. The party's Deputy Chairperson, Ibrahim Waheed, emphasized that MDP follows a political framework that includes primary elections to select candidates. However, the absence of a proper system to handle city council responsibilities has created difficulties. The Elections Commission (EC) has also not made any changes to the jurisdiction of city councils, further adding to the challenges. The party is now focusing on addressing these issues to ensure a smooth electoral process and effective governance.
