MDP Leader Shahid Hails Nasheed-Solih Reunion as Boost for Upcoming Council Elections
Politics ·
Abdullah Shahid, President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), expressed renewed optimism for the party’s prospects in the upcoming local council elections following a meeting between former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The two leaders, who had been at odds since the 2023 MDP presidential primary, set aside their differences during their December 24 meeting, pledging to collaborate for the elections. Shahid described the reunion as a revival of the party’s spirit, emphasizing the importance of unity to defeat the current government. He acknowledged the party’s disappointment in 2023 when disagreements between Nasheed and Solih led to internal divisions but expressed hope that their renewed partnership would inspire reconciliation among members nationwide. Shahid also expressed confidence in positive changes for the Maldives in the coming year, despite the current challenges. Nasheed, who had left the MDP to form the Democrats, rejoined the party in June 2023 after publicly supporting the government.
