MDP Postpones Chairperson Election to Focus on Local Council Polls

Politics ·
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to delay the election of its permanent chairperson until after the upcoming Local Council Elections. The decision was approved during an MDP National Congress meeting held on Monday night, where 58 members voted in favor of the proposal. Former Member of Parliament Ahmed Saleem, who proposed the postponement, emphasized the need to prevent the chairperson election from overshadowing the local polls. The position became vacant following the resignation of former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail. In the interim, Abdul Gafoor Moosa, MP for Hanimaadhoo, was elected as the party’s interim chairperson with 65 out of 66 votes. Moosa, the longest-serving member of the MDP Parliamentary Group, expressed gratitude for the support from the members.
