MDP Table Motion for Public Referendum on Rasmalé Land Transfer to Eagle Hills
Politics ·
The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has introduced a resolution in the People’s Majlis calling for a public referendum on whether to approve or reject the transfer of 500 hectares of land in Rasmalé to UAE-based company Eagle Hills. The resolution, presented by the MDP Parliamentary Group, cites constitutional provisions granting the Majlis the power to conduct opinion polls on important matters and the Referendum Act allowing votes on significant decisions within the legislature's authority. The MDP National Council had earlier approved a similar resolution on the first day of the month, with 57 out of 58 members present voting in favor. Former President and MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed expressed full support for the Rasmalé project during the session where the resolution was passed. The resolution also calls for making public the 99-year lease agreement, which reportedly involves no upfront cost or rent from Eagle Hills, and urges that no further rights be granted to the company or any third party until the referendum results are known. The MDP plans to raise public awareness about the risks and hold the government accountable, potentially collaborating with other parties if the government does not respond.
