MDP's Faisal Claims Corruption in Raashmafushi Land Deal, Warns of Long-Term Risks
Politics ·
Former Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Faisal Ismail, has stated that there is no issue with the UAE's Equal Hills company per se, but that the matter concerns handing over land in Raashmafushi for free without an equitable cost. Speaking on Aasandha News' 'Seen and Unseen' program, Faisal, who is contesting the MDP presidential primary with the support of MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed, said it would not have been an issue if the government had structured the $20 billion residential tourism investment to ensure a significant share for the state. However, he said he believes there is major corruption involved, noting rumors that only 10 percent of what is sold will be taken, and this is not even certain. Faisal highlighted the biggest concern as granting land for more than 99 years, warning that such a deal could effectively give land forever, and that selling land to thousands of foreigners could lead to settlement and eventual pressure for citizenship and religious freedom, potentially creating a situation similar to what Palestine faced. He stressed that the project should not proceed by amending the Constitution without seeking the people's voice. Opinions among MDP leaders differ, with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih opposing the project while President Nasheed is not entirely against it. President Dr. Muhammad Muizzu has repeatedly said such remarks mislead the public, stating the project is entirely beneficial and that the government will send a special bill on real estate tourism to the People's Majlis, with safeguards including restrictions on foreign ownership, a ban on Israeli citizens buying or renting property, and a mosque with five daily prayers.
