Meedhoo Council Marks First Anniversary of Separate Council Establishment

Politics ·
The Meedhoo Council in Addu Atoll celebrated the first anniversary of its establishment as a separate council on 5 November. The milestone comes a year after a vote held on 25 October last year, in which residents of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo voted overwhelmingly to separate from the Addu City Council. To mark the occasion, a special event was held where photographs of former leaders who have governed Meedhoo were displayed in the council meeting room. Former secretaries and councillors were invited to present the photos, and family members of those who have passed away or no longer reside on the island were given the opportunity to display their images. Speaking at the ceremony, Council President Ahmed Shazeer said the decision to display the photographs was made with the aim of providing this information to future generations. He added that efforts are underway to publish details about these individuals on the Council's website. Shazeer also announced the formation of a committee dedicated to the history and culture of Addu Meedhoo. During the ceremony, the official song of Meedhoo was released. Shazeer explained that the council considers it important to have a specific song to be used in various events promoting the island. The song was specially composed for Meedhoo and is sung by Aminath Naufaa, who belongs to Meedhoo. Former senior officials who attended the ceremony expressed joy at seeing the successful work moving forward with the establishment and progress of a separate council in Meedhoo. Council members have assured that they are determined to work together with the Council President to provide prosperity, safety, and a convenient future for the island and its residents. The Meedhoo Council has decided to celebrate this occasion vibrantly every year.
