Meemu Atoll to Get New Fuel Station to Ease Fishing Vessel Hardships
Politics ·
The government will establish a new fuel station in Meemu Atoll following the Eid celebrations, providing critical infrastructure to a region that has long struggled with fuel shortages. The announcement was made by the Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, who highlighted the administration's resolve to support the fishing community amid volatile global economic conditions.
Fishermen in Meemu Atoll, a vital hub for the industry, have historically been forced to source fuel from neighboring atolls. This inefficient workaround has added significant logistical burdens and costs to local operations. The new facility aims to close this infrastructure gap, ensuring that vessels can refuel locally and operate more sustainably.
Minister Shiyam noted that the initiative is a direct response to the steep rise in oil prices driven by conflicts in the Middle East. By prioritizing the alleviation of these hardships, the government views the support of the fisheries sector not just as an economic necessity, but as a social imperative, given that fishing is a primary livelihood for families across the archipelago.
To optimize distribution, the government is collaborating with the State Trading Organization (STO). While the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) previously led fuel supply, fishermen now prefer STO due to its role as a direct importer and its more robust procurement infrastructure. This partnership is central to the government's strategy to build fuel stations in every atoll.
This development aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's campaign pledge to provide subsidized fuel at STO prices to fishing vessels nationwide. The current administration has already expanded fuel distribution points from four to thirteen, a more than threefold increase in accessibility. Official data indicates that approximately 2.5 million liters of fuel have already been distributed to fishermen under this expanded policy framework.
