Meemu Fish Port Project Grinds to a Halt Under Muizzu Administration

Politics ·
The Meemu Fish Port Project in Mulah, which was nearing completion under the previous administration led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has come to a standstill since President Mohamed Muizzu took office. Mohamed Ihusan, a National Congress member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) representing Mulah, revealed that significant progress had been made on the project before the government transition. However, all work has effectively stopped under the current administration. Additionally, a $5.1 million agreement signed with Saudi Arabia’s R.O.S. For Trading company in October 2023 to build a 500-ton cold storage facility in Mulah has seen no construction activity over a year later. These projects are vital for the 1,800 residents of Mulah, who primarily rely on fishing for their livelihoods. The Solih administration had invested MVR 52.95 million in the Meemu Fish Port Project, developed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The cold storage facility, designed to brain-freeze 50 tons of fish daily, was initially slated for completion within 300 days. The delays have raised concerns about the economic impact on the local community.
