Environment ·
The National Meteorological Centre (Met Office) has said heavy rain and bad weather are expected across all areas of the Maldives for the next three days.
The office said that because this is the El Niño season, the incidence of sudden bad weather and thunderstorms has increased.
The current thunderstorms are affecting all areas of the Maldives, and it is forecast that the south of the Maldives will experience the worst weather today.
The office forecasted that wind speeds will range between five and 15 miles, but the seas will remain calm.
The Met Office also stated that visibility is poor during these days, typically ranging between 1 and 2 kilometres, while currently visibility stands at 7 kilometres.
However, the Met Office has issued a yellow alert starting from Gaaf Alif Atoll up to Addu City. The yellow alert for these atolls is in effect from 13:15 today to 19:00 tonight.
The Met Office said that heavy rain accompanied by thunder is expected in the region during the alert hours.
