Mianz College Partners with Bangladesh to Propagate 20,000 Gifted Trees

Mianz College and the High Commission of Bangladesh have signed a strategic agreement to propagate trees gifted by the Bangladeshi government to support the Maldives' ambitious five-million-tree programme. Under the terms of the agreement, the School of Agriculture nursery at Mianz College in Addu City will receive seedlings from Bangladesh. The college will be responsible for propagating and nurturing these plants to an appropriate size before returning them to the High Commission, which will then formally hand them over to the Maldivian government. High Commissioner Dr. Md Nazmul Islam described the initiative as a critical component of the Bangladesh-Maldives Green Initiative. He confirmed that an initial batch of 20,000 trees of various species will be gifted under this project, marking a significant contribution to the Maldives' environmental restoration efforts. The partnership specifically addresses a recurring logistical challenge: the high mortality rate of plants transported from Bangladesh via air or sea. By propagating the seedlings locally in Addu City, Mianz College aims to eliminate transportation damage and ensure a higher survival rate for the vegetation. Ahmed Mottaki, CEO and Chairman of Mianz College, emphasized that Bangladesh possesses extensive expertise in agriculture and tree cultivation. He noted that this collaboration provides a unique opportunity for the Maldives to benefit from that experience and facilitate further local research in agricultural science. The signing ceremony was attended by High Commissioner Dr. Md Nazmul Islam, with the agreement signed by Head of Chancery Syed Amjad Ali and Mianz College Rector Dr. Fathimath Shaheema.
