MIFCO and FSM Launch Credit Fuel System to Ease Fishermen's Financial Burden

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) and Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) have signed a strategic agreement to provide fuel on credit to fishermen, offering a vital financial lifeline to the nation's fishing community. The initiative, which takes effect immediately, allows vessels selling their catch to MIFCO to access fuel without upfront payment. Under the new arrangement, fuel will be available at MIFCO centers equipped with FSM fuel sheds. The credit facility is currently operational at the Felivaru, Kooddoo, and Addu Fisheries Complexes. This system is designed to streamline operations by deducting the cost of fuel directly from the payments due to fishermen after their catch is sold and the corresponding invoice is settled. These deductions will be processed within 48 hours of the sale. The agreement was formalized during a ceremony at the MIFCO head office, signed by MIFCO Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mohamed Anas and FSM Managing Director Fathimath Ashan. The partnership follows specific directives from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to address the systemic challenges facing the fishing industry. For many local fishers, the high cost of fuel and the requirement for immediate payment have been significant barriers to productivity. This credit system directly addresses a primary grievance raised by fishermen during recent consultative meetings led by CEO Mohamed Anas across various regional centers. By removing the immediate financial pressure of refueling, the government aims to increase the confidence of the fishing fleet and ensure more consistent activity at sea. MIFCO officials stated that this move is a critical step in the government's broader effort to alleviate the economic hardships faced by those in the fisheries sector, ultimately strengthening the stability of the Maldivian fishing industry.
