MIFCO Expands Market Reach by Launching Premium Fish Products in Sri Lanka

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has officially entered the Sri Lankan market, introducing a range of premium fish products during a ceremony attended by President Mohamed Muizzu during his state visit to Sri Lanka.
Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam led the launch, emphasizing that the move leverages the deep-rooted cultural and economic ties between the two nations. According to Minister Shiyam, Sri Lankan consumers had already demonstrated a strong preference for high-quality Maldivian fish products prior to the official market entry.
During the event, MIFCO unveiled its 'Fasmeeru' brand, showcasing a diverse portfolio that includes smoked tuna, various canned tuna options, and traditional dried fish products. The launch aims to provide Sri Lankan consumers with consistent access to premium seafood while opening new avenues for cross-border business collaboration.
This expansion is a key component of the Maldives' broader fisheries modernization strategy under President Muizzu’s administration. The government is focusing on increasing economic efficiency and environmental sustainability to position the Maldives as a global leader in responsible marine resource management.
The move builds upon the 'From Maldives' national branding initiative launched in July last year. This strategy, managed by the Maldives Fisheries and Ocean Resources Marketing and Promotion Corporation, seeks to maximize economic returns from the fisheries sector by enhancing processing, packaging, and cold chain infrastructure.
The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking Sri Lankan officials, including Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Vasantha Samarasinghe and Zuraish Hashim, CEO of Development Interplan Ceylon, signaling strong bilateral support for the trade initiative.
