A new fish processing facility has officially commenced operations in Hulhumeedhoo, Addu City. The plant, operated by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), aims to purchase and process catches from fishermen across the southern atolls, providing a dedicated market for the region.
The inauguration ceremony was led by State Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Aminath Hussain Shareef. She was joined by MIFCO's Chief Executive Officer, Farhath Shaheer, and officials from both the company and the Addu Fisheries Complex.
According to MIFCO, the core objective of the facility is to increase profitability for local fishers and stakeholders by offering a safe, reliable, and modern processing service. The plant utilizes blast freezing technology to preserve fish quality. Processed products are already available for direct purchase at the MIFCO store in Hulhumeedhoo, and the company is actively seeking distributors to expand availability throughout Addu City.
This development is part of MIFCO's broader strategy to strengthen the national fisheries sector through capacity building and infrastructure investment. The expansion efforts are supported by both government initiatives and multilateral financing, highlighting the economic importance of the industry to the Maldives.
