MIFCO to Open Retail Stores Across Most Populated Maldivian Islands

The state-owned Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) is expanding its retail footprint to the most populous islands across the Maldives, aiming to make essential fish products more affordable and accessible to the public. Chief Operating Officer Hamid Nazeem announced that the company is currently finalizing logistical arrangements to establish storefronts beyond the capital city of Malé. The initiative focuses on cities and heavily populated islands throughout the atolls, ensuring that high-quality fishery products reach a wider domestic audience. "Our strategic vision is to establish MIFCO retail stores across the highly populated islands of the Maldives, ensuring our products are provided to the general public both affordably and conveniently," Nazeem stated in an interview with PSM News. The expansion has already begun, with the first regional outlet inaugurated in the Hithadhoo district of Addu City this past May. This outlet serves as a operational framework for the company's goal of providing citizens with a direct way to purchase products at favorable prices. Parallel to its domestic growth, MIFCO is also targeting international markets where Maldivian communities reside. This global strategy recently saw the opening of a MIFCO outlet in Sri Lanka, coinciding with an official visit by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The company's product range available at these stores includes canned tuna, fish paste, crushed fish, and the popular 'Fasmeeru' brand of smoked fish. By bridging the gap between production and the end consumer, the state-owned enterprise seeks to strengthen the nation's fishing industry while reducing the cost of living for local families.
