Minister Ali Ihusaan Urges Police to Prioritize Fight Against Drug Epidemic
World ·
Minister for Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has identified the eradication of the drug epidemic as the most critical mission for the Maldives Police Service. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the 42nd Basic Police Training Course, the Minister emphasized that protecting the nation from illicit drugs is the most urgent priority for maintaining internal security.
Minister Ihusaan highlighted that the drug trade serves as the primary financial engine for organized crime within the archipelago. He warned that the epidemic does more than threaten national security; it destroys individual lives and tears families apart, creating a ripple effect of social instability across the islands.
While acknowledging the difficulty of the task, the Minister noted that significant progress has been made over the last two and a half years. He signaled that these efforts would accelerate, stating that police operations targeting trafficking networks will be further intensified in the coming year. According to the Minister, the full impact of these strategic efforts to dismantle drug networks will become evident by next year.
Beyond tactical operations, the Minister addressed the ethical conduct of the police force. He reminded the new graduates that the most powerful tool at their disposal is not physical equipment or weaponry, but the trust of the community. He urged officers to serve with humility and integrity, stressing that avoiding arrogance is essential to maintaining the public confidence necessary for effective policing.
Minister Ihusaan concluded by calling for a strong and decisive response to all forms of crime. He urged the police to remain agile and fully prepared to address a broadening spectrum of criminal activities that threaten the peace and stability of the Maldives.
