Minister Ali Shareef Urges Unified Global Action at Road to COP31 Summit
Politics ·
Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef has called for intensified international cooperation to combat the escalating global climate crisis. Speaking at the 'Turkiye's Road to COP31: Resilient Cities' high-level meeting, the Minister emphasized that the urgency of the climate threat demands both innovative solutions and a unified global response.
The conference served as a critical forum for environmental leaders to discuss overcoming climate challenges and establishing sustainable recovery pathways. During his address, Minister Shareef reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to global climate initiatives and expressed full support for Turkiye's leadership in hosting the upcoming COP31 Summit, the largest environmental gathering in the country's history.
Beyond the main sessions, the Minister engaged in a series of strategic bilateral meetings to secure tangible support for vulnerable island nations. In a meeting with Anaclaudia, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat), discussions focused on integrating Maldivian proposals into the Adaptation Fund. This effort is central to securing the necessary financial resources for nations on the front lines of climate change.
Minister Shareef also met with Brunei's Minister of Development, Muhammad Juanda, to align their priorities ahead of the COP Summit. The two leaders explored how bilateral collaboration between their respective nations could amplify their collective influence and impact on the global stage.
Further strengthening regional ties, the Minister held talks with Bangladesh's Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Abdul Awal Mintoo. Their conversation centered on developing regional cooperation mechanisms to mitigate the environmental risks specifically threatening South Asian nations.
These diplomatic efforts underscore the Maldives' proactive approach to climate diplomacy, seeking to bridge the gap between high-level policy discussions and the practical financial and technical assistance required to protect low-lying coastal states from rising sea levels and extreme weather events.
