Defence and National Security Minister Hassan Rashid has stated that the National Counter Terrorism Centre and the Islamic University of Maldives can work together to counter attacks being made on the ideology of Maldivians in the emerging globalized world. The minister made these remarks while addressing the second session of the convocation ceremony of the Islamic University of Maldives. He appreciated and thanked the university for its efforts in spreading Islamic education in the country. Minister Rashid said that learning is a religious obligation and paves the way for prosperity and development for oneself, society and the nation, and that education, skills and scientific thinking must be used in a manner that benefits society and strengthens the country. Highlighting that various attacks are targeting the ideology of Maldivians, the minister stated that educational institutions must undertake many efforts against such ideologies. He noted that one of the biggest problems facing the country is that some parties issue religious rulings and mislead young minds despite not receiving religious education from any Islamic school or university. Therefore, the Defence Ministry's Counter Terrorism Centre and the Islamic University can play an important role in working together to identify these issues. The minister described the Islamic University of Maldives as a scientific institute playing an important role in providing higher Islamic education in the country and as a pillar that safeguards and maintains the Islamic unity of Maldivians and fosters cohesion among them. He advised the graduates to set an example, use their acquired education and upbringing in a positive manner, and contribute to the development of the country.
