Minister Heena Commits to Sustainable Preservation of Historic Sites in Baarah

World ·
The Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Heena Waleed, has pledged to implement a sustainable management system to protect the ancient monuments of Baarah in Haa Alifu Atoll. The commitment follows a comprehensive inspection tour of the island's historical landmarks, aimed at ensuring the Maldives' cultural legacy is preserved for future generations. During her visit, Minister Heena toured several significant archaeological and cultural sites, including Utheemu, Thakandhoo, and Baarah. Her assessment focused on the quality of ongoing conservation efforts and the readiness of these sites for the upcoming National Day celebrations. A primary goal is to integrate heritage preservation seamlessly into the island's broader urban and economic development plans. Meeting with the Baarah Council, the Minister emphasized that local collaboration is essential for long-term success. She highlighted the historic mosque as a prime example of a site requiring consistent maintenance. "Our vision is to work hand-in-hand with the council and the community to establish a sustainable management system for all ancient monuments in Baarah," Minister Heena stated. Several critical development projects are currently underway to revitalize the island's heritage landscape. These include the restoration of the historic Kalhuoffumi area, the development of Vaaruge, and the cleaning and upgrading of Kamanaa Magu. The Minister confirmed that these works are advancing rapidly, with a strict deadline for completion before the National Day festivities later this year. The tour included visits to key archaeological locations, such as the Olhufathi Koaru—the site where the historic Kalhuoffumi vessel was once kept—and the three Berebedhi trees traditionally used to secure the boat. The Minister also inspected the island's mangroves and the historic Friday Mosque, underscoring the spiritual and natural history that defines the region's identity.
