Minister Warns Delays Undermine 'Housing for All' Promise for Maldivian Families

Politics ·
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has stated that implementation delays are creating significant obstacles to providing homes for Maldivian families in need. He made the remarks during the foundation-laying ceremony for a new 182-unit housing project in Hulhumalé. Dr. Muththalib emphasized that every moment lost directly hampers efforts to deliver housing, making it especially difficult for young families to plan their futures. He framed the government's 'Housing for All' policy as a priority to provide security and better opportunities for families without adequate homes. The minister criticized political obstacles that waste time and prevent results, stating a government is elected to improve people's quality of life. He pointed to public expectations for essential infrastructure, including housing, water systems, and harbor development. Dr. Muththalib also commented on broader governance challenges, suggesting that a proposal to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day aims to allow an elected government to fully utilize its mandate without disruption. He noted that some initiatives in the administration's first year were delayed due to a budget passed by the previous parliament that was not aligned with the current agenda. Despite financial challenges, the minister highlighted the Hulhumalé project—a collaboration between the Bank of Maldives and the government—as an example of the progress possible through focused effort. He reiterated that under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's leadership, multiple initiatives are being implemented to improve living standards and address key public needs.
