Ministers Urge Youth to Master Oratory for Professional and Personal Success

The 39th National Oratory Competition opened this week with a strong call for Maldivian youth to master the art of public speaking, framing eloquence as a vital tool for both career advancement and character development. Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed emphasized that communication skills are the most critical attribute in the modern professional landscape. She described public speaking as an art form that requires more than mere memorization, demanding the courage and confidence to convey internal thoughts that resonate emotionally with an audience. According to Minister Waleed, these competitions do more than refine speech; they sharpen critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. She noted that children who develop the capacity to articulate their ideas clearly will secure significantly more opportunities for progress in their future careers. Adding a spiritual and personal dimension to the event, Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed highlighted the high status of articulateness within Islam. He recalled that the first five verses of the Holy Quran explicitly emphasize reading, underscoring the religious importance of literacy and communication. Minister Shaheem cited the example of Prophet Musa [AS], who sought the assistance of his brother Harun [AS] due to the latter's superior eloquence when addressing Pharaoh. He noted that every prophet was equipped to convey divine messages in the native tongue of their people, illustrating that effective communication is essential for leadership and influence. To help students achieve excellence in oratory, Minister Shaheem recommended four essential practices: frequent reading, listening to great speeches, continuous learning, and seeking formal training. In a move to further incentivize the craft, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs announced it will provide prizes for every annual tournament starting this year. The event serves as a cornerstone for cultivating the next generation of Maldivian leaders, bridging the gap between traditional values and the demands of a contemporary global workforce.
