Ministry Opens Applications for Fourth Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme
World ·
The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, in partnership with the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), has opened applications for the fourth session of this year’s Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme. The initiative aims to bolster the nation's aquaculture sector by developing a pool of skilled personnel and sparking local interest in sustainable marine farming.
Scheduled to take place from October 31 to November 12, the 14-day intensive course will be hosted at the Maniyafushi Research and Training Facility. This specific cycle is limited to 15 participants, focusing on providing hands-on technical expertise in mariculture.
The comprehensive curriculum covers essential aquaculture systems and the production of live feed. Trainees will gain specialized knowledge in hatchery and nursery production for key species, including grouper, sea cucumber, and milkfish. Beyond animal husbandry, the programme includes modules on aquatic plant cultivation, the theory of seaweed farming, and critical methods for identifying and preventing diseases in cultured organisms.
Environmental stewardship remains a core component of the training, with dedicated sessions on protecting the ecosystem during aquaculture operations. This programme is conducted in collaboration with the World Bank-supported TRANSFORM project, underlining the strategic importance of diversifying the Maldives' blue economy.
Prospective applicants must submit a completed application form and a copy of their national identity card to the Maldives Marine Research Institute by 2:00 PM on Thursday, October 18. Submissions are also accepted via email. Due to the limited number of slots, the Ministry noted that priority will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
To ensure full immersion, participants will reside at the Maniyafushi Research and Training Facility for the duration of the course. The MMRI will provide all necessary logistics, including transportation between Malé and Maniyafushi, as well as full accommodation and meals for the duration of the training.
