Minivan Run Draws Large Crowds to Celebrate Independence Day in Hulhumalé
World ·
Hundreds of participants gathered in Hulhumalé Phase II on Monday for the 'Minivan Run,' a 5-kilometre event held as part of this year’s Independence Day celebrations. Organized by the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage in partnership with WeRun Maldives, the event brought together people of all ages to mark the national occasion through fitness and community spirit.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed emphasized that the initiative was designed to foster unity and friendship among the public. She noted that the run provided a positive environment for citizens to connect while promoting the long-term benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.
Recognizing that not all participants are athletes, Minister Waleed encouraged those unable to run to participate by walking, highlighting that any form of physical activity contributes to overall well-being. This inclusive approach saw a diverse turnout, with families and friends completing the course together.
Participants expressed high satisfaction with the event, noting that such activities add a vibrant, communal dimension to national celebrations. Many called for similar events to be integrated into future Independence Day festivities to encourage social cohesion.
To commemorate their achievement, every participant received a special badge upon completing the 5-kilometre route. Following the success of the Hulhumalé event, WeRun Maldives announced plans to expand the 'Minivan Run' to other cities across the archipelago next year, aiming to make the celebration a nationwide movement.
