The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has recovered MVR 623 million so far this year from money that should have been paid to the state as taxes and various fees but had not been paid, according to MIRA figures.
The figures, published in MIRA's latest September revenue report, show that the money was deposited into the state during the past nine months through enforcement actions carried out to recover unpaid funds.
MIRA recovered MVR 394.51 million by sending notices and MVR 123.4 million under installment plans set up to allow payments in parts.
In addition, MVR 86.58 million was recovered through dues clearance, MVR 10.02 million through phone calls and emails, and MVR 8.43 million by freezing bank accounts.
MIRA said its records show that the total amount still owed to the state by various parties remains more than MVR 14 billion.
MIRA is the main institution established in the Maldives to collect taxes, enforce tax-related laws, and receive various fees and revenue due to the state.
