MMA Launches First Outbound Travel Spending Survey Since 2018
World ·
The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has launched a comprehensive survey to analyze the spending habits of Maldivians traveling abroad, marking the first such data-collection effort in six years.
From July 25 to 31, MMA officials will be stationed in the arrival hall of Velana International Airport (VIA). Staff will invite returning passengers to voluntarily participate in the study to provide real-time insights into how citizens utilize their funds while overseas.
The survey is designed to capture a detailed snapshot of outbound tourism. Key metrics include the primary purpose of travel, destination countries, and specific costs associated with airfare and accommodation. Additionally, the MMA is tracking medical expenses and overall trip expenditures to better understand the financial drivers of foreign travel.
To address privacy concerns, the authority has emphasized that the process is entirely anonymous. The questionnaire will not collect personal identifiers, such as names or home addresses, ensuring that all responses remain confidential and are used exclusively for statistical analysis.
This initiative is more than a simple data exercise; it serves as a critical tool for national economic planning. The MMA noted that the findings will directly inform the formulation of monetary policy and the strategic planning of foreign exchange reserves. By understanding the volume and nature of currency leaving the country, the central bank can more accurately assess economic trends and manage the nation's liquidity.
Officials have urged the traveling public to cooperate with the staff at the airport, noting that accurate participation is essential for developing policies that reflect the actual economic behavior of the Maldivian people.
