MMBC Prioritizes Financial Independence for Media to Strengthen Press Freedom in Maldives
Politics ·
The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) has identified the financial independence and resilience of media institutions as a primary objective for the sector's growth. The announcement came in a formal message issued to mark World Press Freedom Day, emphasizing that economic stability is key to maintaining a free and unbiased press.
Currently, the Maldives is ranked 108th on the global press freedom index. While this reflects a shift from the previous year, the MMBC stated that active efforts are underway to improve this standing and bolster the overall media landscape. The Commission aligned its goals with this year's UNESCO theme, "Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security."
According to the Commission, press freedom extends beyond the simple ability to publish or broadcast. It is viewed as a fundamental pillar of a peaceful society, essential for safeguarding human rights and fostering sustainable development. By acting as the "fourth estate," journalists play a critical role in holding the government accountable and empowering citizens with objective information.
To achieve these goals, the MMBC has recently introduced new standards of conduct alongside updated regulations and policies. These frameworks are designed to help media houses move toward self-sufficiency, reducing vulnerability to external pressures. Beyond financial stability, the Commission highlighted the safety of journalists and the provision of modern training as urgent priorities for the industry.
However, the MMBC stressed that the right to press freedom carries equal weight in responsibility and accountability. The Commission noted that the public has a right to accurate information, making it essential for media professionals to adhere strictly to established ethical standards during dissemination.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with journalists and media organizations to overcome systemic challenges and ensure that press freedom is safeguarded across the archipelago.
