MNDF Intercepts Foreign Fishing Vessels Near Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and Fuvahmulah

World ·
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has launched a maritime operation after receiving reports of unauthorized foreign fishing vessels operating within Maldivian waters. The vessels were sighted in the Equatorial Channel, specifically between Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and Fuvahmulah City. According to the MNDF, two foreign fishing vessels were spotted traveling from east to west. The ships were last reported approximately nine nautical miles off the west coast of Fiyoari in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Upon receiving the intelligence, the MNDF Southern Area Command immediately mobilized its assets to intercept the vessels and secure the area. While the MNDF has not yet disclosed the specific nationality of the crews or the scale of the operation, the rapid deployment underscores the military's commitment to protecting the nation's marine resources. The Equatorial Channel is a critical maritime corridor, and the presence of unauthorized vessels poses a direct threat to the Maldives' exclusive economic zone and local fishing interests. This operation is part of a broader, routine effort by the MNDF to monitor territorial waters and deter illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The military regularly intercepts unauthorized vessels and hands over the suspects and their catches to the Maldives Police Service for formal investigation and legal proceedings. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the Southern Area Command works to locate and neutralize the intrusion. The government maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward foreign entities exploiting Maldivian waters, emphasizing that such actions undermine the sustainability of the archipelago's fragile marine ecosystem.
