MNU Appoints New Deans for Arts and Health Sciences Faculties

The Maldives National University (MNU) has appointed new leadership for its Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Health Sciences, following the conclusion of the previous deans' four-year terms. The appointments were formalized during a ceremony held on Tuesday. Dr. Aminath Riyaz has been appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Dr. Riyaz brings a deep history with the institution, having first joined MNU in 1992 as a librarian at the Institute of Health Sciences. Over her career, she served as Chief Librarian for 15 years before returning to the university in 2018. Since then, she has progressed from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer and Assistant Professor. During her appointment, the university recognized Dr. Riyaz for her leadership as a Head of Department, specifically citing her contributions to faculty development and university committee management. In her address, Dr. Riyaz emphasized a commitment to inclusivity, stating that the faculty must provide fair services to students of all abilities. She further argued that university education should be designed to ensure students provide tangible benefits to society well beyond the campus gates. Meanwhile, Dr. Aishath Shanoora has been appointed to lead the Faculty of Health Sciences, marking her second term in the role. Dr. Shanoora's tenure with MNU spans 19 years, beginning in 2001 as a Principal Instructor of Education. She has since risen through the academic ranks to serve as an Assistant Professor and Dean. Outlining her vision for the next four years, Dr. Shanoora announced plans to introduce new academic programs targeting sectors of national importance. She also pledged to strengthen postgraduate education and integrate modern technological advancements, specifically highlighting the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the healthcare sector. The leadership transitions come as MNU continues to align its academic offerings with the evolving needs of the Maldivian workforce and the broader technological landscape.
