MNU Book Fair Opens to Showcase Maldivian Authors and Promote Reading Culture

The Maldives National University (MNU) has launched its annual book fair, an event dedicated to celebrating local literary talent and fostering a nationwide reading culture. The fair was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed. Now in its sixth edition, the event serves as a vital platform for Maldivian writers, aiming to make their works more accessible to the general public. By providing a centralized space for various genres, the fair also offers a unique opportunity for the publication and debut of previously unpublished manuscripts. During the opening ceremony, Minister Dr. Shaheem emphasized the transformative power of reading. He noted that extensive reading strengthens the mind and is a cornerstone of intellectual development. According to the Minister, engaging with diverse fields of study and multiple languages significantly expands a person's knowledge base, offering profound educational benefits. This year's fair features 42 participants, including both writers and booksellers. In a move to support the local creative economy, MNU has provided participation slots free of charge. Beyond traditional literature for children and adults, the event showcases general knowledge texts, school stationery, and various locally crafted products. A new book was also officially launched during the inauguration. The exhibition will run until the 5th of the month, operating on a split schedule to accommodate visitors. The fair is open daily from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and again from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. By bringing a wide array of literature under one roof, MNU continues its effort to integrate intellectual growth into the social fabric of the Maldives, encouraging citizens of all ages to rediscover the joy of reading.
