Former President Mohamed Nasheed has secured a commanding victory in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leadership race, according to provisional data released following the vote on June 12.
Nasheed dominated the three-way contest, collecting 21,301 votes. He comfortably outpaced his closest competitor, South Galolhu Member of Parliament Meekail Ahmed Nasym, who garnered 9,462 votes. A third candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed, finished the race with 132 votes.
The provisional results indicate that 31,129 party members cast their ballots. This figure represents a portion of the total eligible electorate, as party lists showed more than 50,000 members were eligible to participate in the election.
Following the confirmation of his victory, a celebratory event was held at the Artificial Beach on the evening of June 13 to mark the outcome before the official provisional results were formally announced.
This electoral success marks a pivotal return for Nasheed. The former president had previously departed from the MDP amid internal turmoil following his defeat in the party's 2023 presidential primary. After his temporary exit, he rejoined the party ranks in June of last year, and this victory solidifies his regained influence within the organization.
