The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) officially launched its upgraded website and the "Moosun" mobile application on 8 November 2026, providing real-time weather information for 516 areas across the country, including inhabited islands, resorts, industrial islands, airports, and atoll towns.
At a ceremony in Malé, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef inaugurated the platforms, stating that the aim was to offer an easy-to-use resource providing accurate and detailed weather information. He noted that the application was developed by a local team, taking into account past experiences and public needs.
State Minister Ibrahim Mimirah presented a demonstration of the system's technical aspects.
According to the Met Office, the upgraded app now covers 516 areas, up from only five stations previously. Weather forecasts will be updated every three hours, and users can access wind radar data, satellite photos, and information on land subsidence. Emergency weather warnings will be sent instantly via push notifications. The app is available in Dhivehi and English.
These platforms were developed under the "Tayyar" project, jointly implemented by the Met Office and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to strengthen early warning systems for weather disasters. The project was funded by China's "Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund."
UNDP Resident Representative Adnan Cheema said at the ceremony that the platform would provide official forecasts, maritime information, and weather warnings to those who need them most, with emphasis on accessibility for all.
The Met Office announced that the redesigned website is now publicly available, and the upgraded Moosun app can be downloaded on iOS and Android devices.
