Motion Calls for Review of MP Mauroof’s Detention Amid Fishermen’s Protest

Politics ·
A motion has been submitted to the Privileges and Ethics Committee of the People’s Majlis, seeking an investigation into the police detention of MP Mauroof Zakir during the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU) fishermen’s protest. MP Ahmed Shakir, representing Maavah constituency, urged Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla to clarify whether Zakir was formally arrested or merely detained, following police notification of his custody on Thursday. Shakir argued that Zakir was participating in a peaceful protest and that his detention was unlawful, citing excessive police force as a violation of parliamentary dignity. The motion also requested the committee to promptly review the matter. The Secretary General of the People’s Majlis forwarded the issue to the Privileges and Ethics Committee, following Article 259 of the Majlis Rules of Procedure. Police detained three individuals and two boats during the protest but failed to provide clear explanations for their actions or how fishermen obstructed police duties.
