MP Amin warns arbitrary tax changes will damage economy, erode investor confidence

Kanditheemu constituency MP Amin Faisal has warned that abrupt and arbitrary changes to the Maldives' tax system will harm the national economy and the Maldivian people. Speaking during the parliamentary session on Tuesday, MP Amin expressed concern over a bill to amend the Tax Administration Act, arguing that sudden modifications to the tax regime indicate a lack of economic planning by the government. He stated that such unpredictability damages investor confidence in the country and endangers the economy. Furthermore, MP Amin highlighted a specific provision in the bill requiring that 100 percent of disputed tax amounts be paid before an appeal is filed with the Tax Tribunal. He noted that this requirement would cause severe harm to businesses, regardless of their size, as they wait for justice. He urged the Parliament to carefully consider the implications of this clause.
