MP Hussain Shareef: MPs Enter Parliament as Servants of the People, Not as Elites
Politics ·
Hussain Shareef, the MP representing the Hulhumale North constituency, stated in Parliament today that members enter the People's Majlis to serve as servants of the people, holding a position granted by the citizens. Speaking during a debate on a petition submitted with 7,225 signatures calling for the removal of the health insurance provided to MPs, Shareef expressed happiness that the petition had been brought forward, noting the public concern over MPs receiving a special insurance not available to ordinary citizens.
Shareef asserted that the highest authority in the state is the people, and all other positions, including the President and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, are servants of the people. He questioned how many MPs actually use the insurance package provided to them and called for accountability, suggesting that if a system were in place to quickly assist ordinary citizens in need, the questions surrounding MPs' privileges would diminish.
