MP Hussain Sharif Affirms Citizens' Right to Question and Complain

Politics ·
Hulhumale' North constituency MP Hussain Sharif has stated that citizens have the full right to ask questions and lodge complaints. Speaking in Parliament today during a debate on a petition concerning a special insurance scheme for MPs, Sharif said that citizens possess 'every right' to raise questions. 'They have the right to formulate that question. They have every right to ask questions here about any concerns they may have,' he said. Sharif also reminded that members of Parliament are servants of the people, not above them. 'Elected representatives of the people are not a class above the people. They enter this Parliament to serve as servants of the people, even if they are addressed as honourable,' he added. He called for justice to be established in all systems, saying 'I will advise to establish justice within our system. If service is provided knowing that I am here to serve the citizen, without looking at face, colour, height, or shortness, then this problem will be resolved.' The debate arose after a petition submitted by citizens regarding the insurance scheme. Many PNC (Progressive National Congress) MPs have criticised the petition, including PNC PG group leader Ibrahim Falah, who described the petition as a 'very sad' attempt to create discord between citizens and MPs.
