MP Kudoo Seeks Clarity on President Muizzu's Binveriyaa Scheme Promises Amid Delays

Politics ·
MP for North Galolhu constituency, Mohamed 'Kudoo' Ibrahim, has formally requested clarification from the government regarding President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledges on the Binveriyaa housing scheme. During his campaign, President Muizzu promised to abolish the condition requiring Malé residents to relinquish registered land plots of 600 square feet or less when applying for state land plots or flats. However, delays in implementing this pledge have raised concerns. MP Kudoo highlighted that despite Muizzu's statement on 18 September 2023, which emphasized that it was unfair to force residents to give up small plots when receiving new government land, no concrete action has been taken in over two years. The MP sought clarification on four key points: (1) whether Binveriyaa recipients can transfer or sell their existing land in Malé City, (2) the procedure for relinquishing land, (3) if recipients can gift or sell their Malé City plots, and (4) the current stance on abolishing the relinquishment condition. The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Urban Development had previously instructed the Malé City Council to halt transactions for Binveriyaa recipients, citing eligibility criteria violations if plots were gifted or sold. Residents affected by the delays have expressed growing frustration as deadlines for land allocation continue to be missed.
