MP Mohamed Shaheed says government ended struggle for children's education, criticises opposition claims

Politics ·
Member of Parliament for Hulhhoo constituency, Mohamed Shaheed (Shaad), has stated that the current government has brought an end to the era where Maldivians had to struggle to secure good education for their children, providing equal opportunities for all. Speaking about a bill submitted to the Parliament, Shaheed noted that Maldivians have been working hard since time immemorial for the future of their children. He expressed concern that in previous eras, the opportunity to study abroad was available only to the children of government officials, ministers, and atoll chiefs. However, emphasising the importance given to education by this government, Shaheed said that now every student who has capability can get the opportunity without any discrimination. He highlighted that despite difficulties, ensuring the studies of students is a work being done by the government with dedication and justice. Furthermore, highlighting the neglect of the education sector during the previous MDP government, Shaheed said that the historic school in Addu and Hulhhoo, which operated for 80 years, and the closure of the school in Meedhoo, depriving students of education, happened under that administration. Therefore, he said that opposition parties are spreading false information by claiming that this government is restricting educational opportunities. Speaking about providing opportunities to acquire education, Shaheed also criticised some policies of local councils. In this regard, he said that online students should not be denied the opportunity to take exams and that decisions should not be made in a way that benefits a specific group. He stated that every citizen should have the opportunity to obtain education in the manner they choose.
