MP proposes summoning police and military before parliament's security committee over runaway boats

Politics ·
An opposition MP has proposed summoning the police and military before parliament's National Security Services Committee (Committee 241) over the escape of two boats that ran aground in Malé and struck the Sinamalé Bridge. The proposal was made by Hanimaadhoo constituency MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa of the opposition MDP during a committee meeting held on 26 October 2026. It was supported by Maafannu North constituency MNP MP Mohamed Nazim and Mahibadhoo constituency PNC MP Ahmed Thoriq (Tom). The two boats, which had been held by Customs after illegally entering the Maldives, were anchored between Dhoonidhoo and Malé. They fled on the night of 10 September after cutting their anchor ropes during a severe storm, according to the MNDF at the time. The boats then ran ashore on a Malé beach and crashed into the Sinamalé Bridge. The committee's decision on the proposal was not clear as part of the meeting was held in closed session.
