MPL Consults Clearing Agents and Truckers for Thilafushi Port Relocation

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has held a specialized consultation session with clearing agents and cargo truck drivers to refine operational plans for the relocation of the Male’ Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi. As two of the most critical groups in the port's daily ecosystem, these stakeholders provided essential feedback on the logistical challenges they face. Key priorities identified during the session include the need for streamlined customs clearance processes, the establishment of adequate staging areas for heavy vehicles, and the implementation of real-time information sharing to reduce vehicle turnaround times. MPL emphasized that the primary objective of these meetings is to ensure the new facility is designed for maximum convenience and efficiency. By integrating the practical insights of those on the ground, the company aims to build a system that moves goods across the archipelago more quickly and reliably than the current setup. The transition to Thilafushi is a centerpiece of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s economic agenda. The move is designed to solve chronic space constraints at the existing Male' harbour, which has long struggled to keep pace with the nation's growing trade demands. Once operational, the Thilafushi port will function as a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose logistics hub. The facility will feature a modern container terminal, versatile berths, specialized cold-storage units for perishable goods, and bonded warehouses. To ensure seamless trade, the port will operate on a 24-hour logistics network built to international standards. This session is part of a broader engagement strategy by MPL, which has already conducted discussions with government ministries, shipping agents, freight forwarders, and local business owners. The government has officially slated the Thilafushi port to begin its services on November 11, 2026.
