MPL Remains Silent Amid Rumors of Thilafushi Port Sale to DP World
Politics ·
Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has declined to comment on rumors suggesting that the government is negotiating the sale of the Thilafushi port to Dubai-based DP World. The port, currently under development, aims to alleviate congestion at Male’ Commercial Harbor. Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyom raised concerns during a PNF event, alleging that the government is proceeding with the sale despite not publicly disclosing such plans. Yameen claimed that DP World had previously approached him with a similar proposal during his administration, which he rejected. He warned that foreign management of the port could compromise smuggling oversight and lead to job losses for MPL employees. MPL has yet to respond to these allegations. The Thilafushi port project, with its first phase nearing completion next year, is expected to be fully operational within a decade.
