MTCC Announces Strong Turnout for Government Taxi Line Driver Recruitment Drive

Politics ·
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC) has reported a significant turnout for its ongoing walk-in interview aimed at recruiting drivers for the new government taxi line service. The interviews, held at the Maafannu Bus Terminal from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, seek to hire 407 drivers—285 full-time and 122 part-time—to support the launch of a modern, reliable taxi service across Male’. MTCC, which is operating the service under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, has emphasised that priority will be given to candidates already registered in the Ministry’s official taxi driver registry. This initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to improving public access to taxis and enhancing urban mobility. The service, modeled after international ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Grab, will operate 24/7 using a fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) in three different sizes. Initial delays due to concerns over vehicle suitability for local conditions have been resolved, with the Ministry confirming that vehicle customisation and production are now underway.
