MTCC Awarded Contract to Repair Deteriorating Roads Across Malé

World ·
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract to repair critical sections of damaged roads in Malé, as the government seeks to resolve ongoing structural failures affecting the capital's transport network. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development confirmed the contract was awarded on June 15. The scope of work focuses on three primary arteries: Ameenee Magu, Izzudheen Magu, and Boduthakurufaanu Magu. MTCC is currently finalizing preparations to begin the repairs immediately. Significant deterioration has been reported on Ameenee Magu, particularly in the western section. The asphalt surface, which was paved under the previous administration, has lifted unevenly, creating hazardous conditions for motorists. The project will not only address the surface damage but will also include redesigned pavements at bus stop locations to improve commuter safety and accessibility. Specifically, the damaged areas on Ameenee Magu comprise Segments 11 and 12 of a larger development project. These sections were opened to traffic in September 2023. Despite previous attempts to fix the westbound lane near Maafannu Stadium early last year, the asphalt deteriorated rapidly shortly after the repairs were completed. Technical experts attribute the recurring failure to a critical error during the initial construction phase: the road was opened to traffic before the asphalt had fully cured. This premature exposure to heavy vehicle loads caused the surface to break down and become uneven far sooner than expected. The broader Ameenee Magu development project cost USD 5.46 million and involved resurfacing approximately 1.79 kilometers of road. While the project was officially completed in January 2024, the current structural failures have necessitated this urgent government intervention to ensure the long-term viability of the road network.
