MTCC Begins Tarring Repairs on Heavily Used Ameenee Magu Road Segment

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced tarring works on a critical section of Ameenee Magu, marking a key phase in the ongoing repair efforts for one of Malé's busiest thoroughfares. Following the completion of sub-grade work, MTCC is currently laying the Aggregate Base Course (ABC) layer. Company officials estimate that the ABC layer installation will take two days before the final tarring process begins. The current project focuses on a 270-metre stretch extending from the Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu building to the Dharumavantha Hospital Park. In addition to resurfacing the road, the project includes the modification of utility layouts and the redesign of bus stops to improve overall urban functionality. This specific segment had deteriorated rapidly following its initial development. According to MTCC, the degradation was caused by a combination of heavy bus and vehicle traffic, inadequate drainage systems, and the challenge of keeping the road open to traffic during previous maintenance. Engineers are now implementing solutions to address these specific vulnerabilities to ensure the road's longevity. Once this section is tarred and reopened to the public, crews will transition to 'Segment 2,' which runs from the Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu building toward Ghiyasuddin School. The government aims to finalize all repair works by November this year. Furthermore, previously tarred sections of Boduthakurufaanu Magu are scheduled for similar repairs. The wider Ameenee Magu development project involved the construction of 1.79 kilometres of road. The initiative, which concluded in January 2024, was completed under the previous administration at a total cost of USD 5.47 million.
