MTCC Launches Male' Taxi App to Modernize Capital City Transport Services

Politics ·
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has officially launched the "Male' Taxi" mobile application, marking a significant modernization of the government-run taxi service in the capital. The app is designed to increase convenience, safety, and accessibility for both residents and visitors navigating the densely populated city. While the government had previously introduced a web-based booking system, the shift to a dedicated mobile platform responds to the growing demand for smartphone-integrated transport solutions. The application is currently available for iOS users via the App Store, with an Android version expected to launch on the Google Play store in the coming weeks. Key features of the new platform include an advanced trip scheduling system, allowing passengers to book rides at least three hours in advance. To ensure a seamless user experience, the app maintains a digital record of both upcoming and completed journeys. Addressing payment versatility, the application integrates several options to suit different user needs. Passengers can now use an in-app digital wallet for rapid transactions, pay via credit or debit cards through a secure bank gateway, or utilize a "Scan and Pay" service for contactless settlement. Safety remains a priority in the system's design. The app includes an integrated emergency feature for critical situations and built-in call and text functionalities to facilitate real-time coordination between drivers and passengers. Additionally, a dedicated lost-and-found mechanism has been implemented to help users recover items left in vehicles. Despite the digital upgrade, MTCC confirmed that traditional booking methods will remain available. Passengers who prefer not to use the app can continue to reserve taxis through the official Male' Taxi website or by calling the dedicated hotline at 1655.
